Our story begins inside the Trojan Horse, just before the final battle of Troy. Odysseus, King of Ithaca and general of the Greek army, gives orders to his men, encouraging them to keep their homes and fallen comrades in mind before they lay waste to Troy. During the battle, he receives a vision from Zeus of the future, and that to avoid imminent doom, he must kill an enemy of a kind he has never encountered and will show no resistance, revealed to be Prince Hector's infant son Astyanax, who is prophesied to exact vengeance on Odysseus' family as an adult. Odysseus is heavily conflicted, having left his own infant son Telemachus back in his kingdom of Ithaca, but in order to keep his family safe, he has no choice but to reluctantly drop the infant over a wall. With Troy in flames, Odysseus and his men sail away and begin their journey home victorious. On the way, Eurylochus, the crew's second in command, informs his captain that the food supply has run out and the men are growing hungry. Odysseus commands his men to follow the birds to land where they can hunt for food. Polites, Odysseus' best friend, spots land in the distance, pointing out a "light that must be a fire" and speculating the presence of people who might share food with the crew. Odysseus is suspicious that the "fire has no smoke" and decides to scout the land ahead with Polites to make sure it's safe, commanding Eurylochus to set the land aflame if they do not return by sunrise. While searching the land for food, Polites attempts to convince Odysseus to let go of his vigilance and distrust which had been exarcerbated by years of war, and instead appreciate strangers' kindness by"greeting the world with open arms". They come upon a group of Lotus Eaters, and Odysseus asks them for food, threatening them with the wrath of his crew if they become hostile, but instead of attacking them as feared, the Lotus Eaters offer them their fruit. Polites initially takes it as a sign that trusting others can lead to good results, but Odysseus notices the fruit and its seeds are glowing. He identifies the fruit as having the ability to control eaters' minds, concluding that his distrust is justified. Undeterred, Polites asks the Lotus Eaters where they can find other food to eat and they direct him to a cave in the east. As they set off, Polites reassures Odysseus that despite all his actions during the war, he can still live his life with a kinder, more open mindset, and Odysseus begins to agree. Suddenly, Athena, Odysseus' divine mentor, transports Odysseus to her Quick-Thought Dimension where time is slowed. Displeased at his consideration of Polites' more open and trusting approach, she shows him a memory of their first meeting when he was younger to remind him of why she chose him as her "Warrior of the Mind". She tells him she does not intend to let him forget his true purpose, and reminds him to not disappoint her before time resumes its normal flow. |
